Curriculum Statement - PSHE
Intent
At All Saints’ Junior School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is underpinned by our Christian Vision: ‘Working Together, Learning for Life, Valuing Everyone.’ Along with our Church school ethos, PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them to develop personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate and respect what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We also instil the importance of being a caring global citizen and ensure that our children recognise the importance of respecting and protecting the environment. We deliver a PSHE curriculum that is accessible to all pupils which promotes their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, emotional and physical development. We ensure that our children understand how to maintain healthy relationships, how to stay safe and how to develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.
Implementation
PSHE lessons are taught weekly and the curriculum is organised into three core themes:
Topics such as relationship and sex education, body changes, drug, alcohol and tobacco education are all taught to an age appropriate level within the themes above.
Lessons involve class discussions and group activities with a focus on engagement in discussions and the children’s understanding of what is taught rather than on written outcomes. Our collective worship themes always support PSHE and SMSC development by having a focus on values such as Respect, Trust, Service in addition to other wider themes.
Whole school teaching and implementation of the Zones of Regulation will support children in understanding and managing their own emotions, with strategies to aid self-regulation.
Impact
The effective teaching of PSHE will impact upon the pupils in the following ways:
